Alyson Rosenberg[1], otherwise known as "Mrs. Rosenberg", was a resident in Room 102 and the original owner of the land upon which Addison Apartments is built.

Appearance

Rose was an elderly woman with grey hair and glasses. She wore a purple blouse, a pearl bracelet, and blue pants. She did not wear any shoes.

In her ghost form, her hair was substantially longer, her skin was rotted, and her orifices were mostly missing.

Personality

Rose talks cryptically her interactions with others and is prone to lengthy tangents when conversing with Sal.

In chapter "In Seeking Providence", she is shown to be a driven and ambitious woman who would do whatever it took to receive recognition from the Cult's Council. This changes later when she concocts a plan to halt the ritual a tome she had stolen would bring about.

In death, she is one of, if not the, most knowledgeable of the ghosts.

Biography

Many years before the arrival of Sal Fisher, Alyson Rosenberg was a naïve young woman who sold her family's land to the Addisons[2], where Addison Apartments and the Addison Temple were to be built.

It is unknown how Rosenberg became involved with the cult, only that she desired a place among their Council and retrieved the Book of Forgotten Truths to gain favor and the position she desired[3], an action she would later regret.

When Jim Johnson arrived from his desolated planet, she greeted him and requested he join the cult and herself in their efforts[4]. When he refused, she appears in his dreams, continuing to compel him to reconsider his decision. Eventually, Johnson concedes.

Although her motives for betraying the cult remain unknown, Rosenberg went to great lengths to halt their efforts to summon The Red-Eyed Demon. In 1987[5][6][7][8], she successfully recruited Stacy Holmes, Gregory Montague, and possibly Sandy Sanderson[9], to help her thwart the cult. Although they successfully destroyed the bones and the "seventh book"[10], they still failed, as Red-Eyes swiftly took hold of a female cultist and later Luke Holmes to carry out his mysterious goals. The Holmes family, and likely Greg and Rose as well, were all violently butchered by Red-Eyes.

Rosenberg remained as a ghost in Addison Apartments' Room 102, putting on the guise of a forgetful geriatric whose thoughts tended to gravitate towards death. When Sal speaks with her, she mistakes him for a girl, and tells the story of her and the Addisons' foolish actions. When the Super Gear Boy is used, her true form is revealed and a chapter of "In Seeking Providence" is unlocked. To this, she gave only a grim warning that Sal shouldn't mess with things he didn't understand.

Rosenberg's final appearance was the day of the Bologna Incident, when she was affected by the Super Gear Boy a second time, thereby revealing her true ghostly form and leaving behind a page of Jim Johnson's journal for Sal.

On the day of the Red-Eyes Infestation, Rosenberg assisted Sal and Larry in driving back the infection, helping the former with details of the demon and latter by freeing him from his place of death/suicide. Thanks to her help, the darkness was temporarily removed and the Endless One killed, but she could not stop the necessity of the Massacre.

Her fate following the aforementioned Mass Murder at Addison Apartments is unknown, like the other ghosts.

Trivia

  • She is oft referred to as a witch, and as she possesses considerable knowledge of the spectral plane, even knowing how to temporarily free ghosts from their place of death (i.e. Larry).
  • Alyson is playable in Chapter 1 of Seeking Providence.
  • Her name is a reference to Willow Rosenberg, a powerful witch on the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer who was portrayed by Alyson Hannigan. This can be backed up by the fact Sal has posters of Buffy the Vampire Slayer in his room - obviously Steve is a fan of the series.
